This weekend, my wife’s family revived a little tradition that had gone dormant for a couple years, and we went to a Northern Illinois University football game. It was Emma’s first football game (she’s almost 4), and was very excited to go. She doesn’t look excited in this picture though, because she just learned that she wasn’t playing in the game.
“But I brought my ball. I need to go down there and play with all my friends.”
*Daddy’s heart breaks*
Luckily we won her over with shelled peanuts, and playing with her older cousin. A benefit of NIU’s terrible season this year is the stadium was more than half empty. We like sitting up top, so there was nobody around us for them to disturb.
Now if you had asked me, I would have told you that she didn’t watch one single minute of that game. However, the next morning when she asked to play catch with me, she did something she’s never done before ... she kicked it a bunch of times. It wasn’t a very exciting game, there were a lot of 3-and-outs, and thus a lot of punting. That kid never ceases to amaze me with how observant she is.

My daughter is 4 (nearly 5) and she’ll hang out and watch football with me. The cutest thing she does: when a penalty flag is thrown she’ll say “uh oh daddy, somebody broke the rules”. It’s insanely cute
